5 tyre storage tips that could save you a fortune

Having multiple sets of tyres is actually a very common occurrence these days as motorists understand the benefits of having at least one set for the winter and one for the summer.

However, should you fail to store your tyres properly, especially your summer tyres during the winter, they may no longer be fit for use when their time comes once again.

Using tyres that have been stored incorrectly is not only dangerous, it could well be illegal, depending on the damage that has been done.

In order to make sure that your tyres are in fabulous condition after a few months on the sidelines, we have compiled a list of our top 5 tyre storage tips that every motorist should know.

Tip 1 – Clean your tyres fully before storing them

A deep clean of your tyres before storing them away in your garage will remove some of the impurities, acids, and road debris that could result in the rubber deteriorating over time.

A season of brake dust and grime will have build up by this point and leaving this on your tyres can do significantly damage, not to mention making your garage dirty!

Use water, a brush and some cleaning solution to give your tyres a good scrub.

Tip 2 – Avoid chemicals

Cleaning your tyres is more than enough to prepare them for storage, you don’t need to worry about applying any sort of dressing or tyre gloss.

In fact, doing so will usually do a whole lot more harm than good. The compounds within your tyres are designed to protect against cracking and the chemicals in the environment and adding compounds will only alter the composition in a negative way.

The last thing you need is to accelerate deterioration of your tyres whilst attempting to stall it.

Tip 3 – Keep them indoors

We get that not everyone has a garage to store their tyres in, but leaving them outside and exposed to the elements really isn’t a very good idea.

Sun in particular can seriously damage tyres as the UV rays beat down so at least try to keep them out of direct sunlight.

Tip 4 – Avoid stacking

If possible, avoid stacking your tyres as this can put unnecessary pressure on them. If you must do so, do not stack them overly high.

The best option is to hang your tyres on racks or wall hooks, or to stand them upright.

Tip 5 – Use a professional mobile tyre fitter

Want to store your tyres but don’t have the space, or simply don’t want the hassle of following all of the other tips on this list? If so a mobile tyre fitting company is the perfect solution for you.

These experts will not only store your tyres safely and securely in an uncontaminated environment, they will come and fit your tyres at your home, or anywhere else you would like them too for that matter, and return to do so again a few months down the line.
